Jessika & Joshua in San Pablo: A Day of the Dead Wedding at Rockefeller Lodge

Jessika and Joshua’s Day of the Dead wedding at Rockefeller Lodge was festive, colorful, and creative, rich with plenty of detail- from the candelabras to the calaveras. It was a perfect day for a fall wedding, sunny yet temperate, with the beginnings of fall colors coming alive.¬†(As an aside, Rockefeller lodge is a surprise-a hidden oasis set in the middle of urban San Pablo- once used as a hunting lodge and retreat by the oil magnate. After the 1906 earthquake, Rockefeller housed hundreds of displaced earthquake refugees on the site).

The bride wove in a color theme of red and black; her bridesmaids wore black gowns, each with a red rose tucked behind her right ear. Jessika wore a strapless lace dress with beaded detail on the bodice, several red roses tucked into her hair to complete the look. Her father walked her down the aisle- a black carpet with red rose petals along the edges. Jessika and Joshua’s daughters were flower girls and ring-bearers ( and unbelievably cute and well behaved).

During the outdoor ceremony, The couple extra changed vows and rings, and performed a sand ceremony, each pouring a separate color into a heart shape vessel to symbolize their union. Jessika poured in red sand, Joshua poured in black, and their officiant, Phil Rountre, poured in white sand to symbolize the divine presence in the union.

After the ceremony, guests mingled and feasted at the oyster bar, while the newly married couple took group photos with their wedding party, then escaped to a private area so they could have a few moments together to relax and take their couples’ portraits.

Joshua had a great time playing games with his daughters before dinner. He’s absurdly accurate when he tosses beanbags, and it’s obvious his girls adore him.

After a buffet dinner, The couple had their first dance followed by speeches and a champagne toast. Things got a little lively on the dance floor once DJ Richard Ortiz mixed it up.
