Nestled at the base of oak-covered hills just a short walk away from the bustling square of downtown Sonoma, The General’s Daughter is the perfect spot for intimate Sonoma weddings. Anyone who loves vintage architecture will immediately fall in love with the 1864 Victorian. Its elegant trim and period details are stunning. The outdoor areas offer perfectly-manicured grounds, resplendent with fruit trees and expansive cobblestone patios. Those factors alone are grounds to make it an ideal choice for Sonoma intimate weddings. Its history makes it all the more appealing, especially since there’s a really cool love story–and a double wedding–involved.
The story begins with the general in question, General Marian Guadelupe Vallejo. He was a many of many talents: military commander, politician, rancher, and founding father of Sonoma. This man fostered Northern California’s transition from Mexican territory to U.S. state. More importantly (to those of you who are viticulturally-inclined), General Vallejo became a leader of California’s wine industry. He was one of the first commercial winemakers in the area.
It’s only fitting that his daughters married into the wine industry. On June 1st, 1863, in the double wedding of the century in Sonoma, Natalia Vallejo and Jovita Vallejo married into the Haraszthy family (founders of the Buena Vista Winery) with their father’s blessing. The home was built for Natalia and her husband, Atilla, as a wedding gift, and they happily raised four children there.
Today The General’s Daughter has been restored to its original grandeur. The spacious East patio, with its fireplace and vine-covered arbor, is an ideal spot for your wedding ceremony or cocktail hour. The West Patio, with its wisteria-covered overhang, offers another beautiful, shaded location for your ceremony or dinner. It’s also an ideal spot for wedding photography (as is the front porch). You can also choose to host the dinner part of your wedding reception indoors in the intimate dining room. The property seats up to 120 people, and your guests will also appreciate the vintage bar (an original, now fully restored).
Tell your guests to come hungry; the owners of the national recognized Ramekins Culinary School also own The General’s Daughter. As the exclusive caterers, their creative menu showcases the best of what Sonoma has to offer, including organic produce from their own 5th Street Farm.
The General’s Daughter is a worthy contender for your intimate Sonoma wedding full of history–including the love story of the century–promising a picturesque historic location and fresh, local culinary delights. As you dance away the evening under the stars, perhaps you’ll hear the echo of laughter from General Vallejo’s grandchildren.
