Natalye and Drew’s Sutro Baths engagement session was everything they wanted: a romantic San Francisco engagement photo location with windswept cliffs, roaring surf, and historical ruins to explore. Part of my role as a San Francisco engagement photographer is suggesting great spots for photos. The two of them love the outdoors, so when I suggested the Sutro Baths, they knew it was the perfect spot. This location is hauntingly beautiful anytime, but all the more so on a fabulously foggy San Francisco afternoon.
What do you do when the guy sitting next to you in genetics class just won’t stop talking? Natalye-the youngest of 10 children-was interested in hearing what the genetics professor had to say. But Drew just kept talking, and eventually she decided that the chatty guy was growing on her. The conversation that began back then continues to this day…
The couple just recently celebrated their six year anniversary. Each year, they travel somewhere together, and Drew decided it was a great time to commemorate their anniversary in a special way. While they were snowboarding in Japan he proposed at the top of the mountain. Talk about an epic proposal!
Shooting at the Sutro Baths requires an adventurous spirit, and a fair amount of strength. You get a pretty good workout going up and down the hundreds of stairs that lead from the top of the cliff down to the water’s edge. One more thing to keep in mind: you’ll also need great balance. You have to walk across the ruins–balance beam style–in order to get some of the most idyllic shots. Without falling over into the water. But it’s worth it. I’ve always loved how it looks like a couple is standing out in the middle of the ocean. That’s why it’s one of my favorite spots for wedding photography. It’s a good thing Natalye wore her combat boots!
We had a great time exploring the ruins. Natalye spotted some cool graffiti, and confessed she’s a fan. Of course, she prefers graffiti with an artistic edge, not just your everyday run-of-the-mill tagging. The shoreline is a great spot for couple’s portraits with the surf in the background, and the red rock in some of the shots reminds me of the desert in Utah. You can see why Sutro Baths engagement sessions are so popular!
Natalye and Drew, thank you for your adventurous spirit, and fun-loving attitudes! Wishing you both happiness together always!
